The minor works in the Cowley Road pedestrian/cyclists path will commence in late March and will last for 3-4 weeks. The works will be done in two parts i.e. to keep one half of the corridor open at any one time with localised barriers erected and diversion signage. Please note, the duration of the works is subject to satisfactory chlorination results which are obviously very thorough so the contractor has to wait on test labs for the series of results etc. Cycle and pedestrian access will be locally restricted but will be maintained. Access will still be provided via the Cambridge Business Park side-gate.
The pedestrian and cycle path opened from w/c 3rd February.

Work on the Greater Cambridge Partnership's Histon Road project started on Monday 3rd February, with traffic management at the junction of Histon Road with Victoria Road and Huntingdon Road.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place between 9.30 am and 3.30 pm, weekdays only. Outside of working hours, all the lights at the junction will work as normal. The junction works are set to take place for 18 weeks (early June) and then there will be partial road closures along King’s Hedges Road to Gilbert Road. For more information regarding planned work in the area, please see here. The contractor will start the reinstatement works within the station square outside Cambridge North Station (CNS) on or around June of this year. These works will involve the eventual removal of site hoardings to reopen the frontage outside the hotel and complete the external hard landscaping as part of the final scheme. In parallel they will also coordinate the removal of the temporary tarmac surfacing in the station square itself and to replace with the original paving. These works will affect accessibility in the square itself. The contractor will prepare method statements to confirm the phasing and sequencing of this work in order to maintain access to the station and disabled parking. This may affect / limit taxi access and drop off facilities short term. The shuttle service access will be maintained and locally adjusted as before. Pedestrian and cycle access will not be affected in this period.
Based on the public consultation which was held in the summer of 2019 where 2,311 people gave their feedback on the Busway, Stagecoach have analysed the data and will be rolling out some changes in Spring 2020. Some of these changes include:
The Busway A and Busway B have switched at certain sections of the route: Busway A will now serve Orchard Park, the Busway B will now serve Science Park, CNS and Cambridge Main Station. Further details on the above changes can be found here. Work on the UK’s first Dutch-style roundabout is progressing despite extra utility work being needed. Additional significant utility work, which was not originally envisaged, means the scheme that will improve road safety by giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists, will now not be completed until early summer. For more information, please see here.
After the final inspection from the Highways and sign off by early morning on Monday 3 February, the pedestrian and cycle path will be reopened by early mid-afternoon. The delay with the reopening has been due to wet weather prior to Christmas and in January.
There will be a need for some minor works for testing and flushing especially in the Cowley Road pedestrian corridor in a few weeks’ time, and whilst the width may be reduced in very limited areas, the pedestrian and cycle path will remain open. The Histon Road project which aims to provide better bus, walking and cycling facilities for those travelling on this busy key route into Cambridge started this week. Construction on the new layout for the Histon Road/Victoria Road/Huntingdon Road junction will start from 31 January, both with temporary traffic signals in place between 9:30 am and 3:30 pm. Histon Road will remain open throughout these phases of work. For details regarding planned work in the area, please see here.
The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) launched a consultation for Madingley Road last week, which seeks views on two options for cycling and walking improvements.
Option 1: provides one-way cycleways on both sides of Madingley Road which would be semi-segregated from the general traffic. No access to any land will be required. Option 2: provides a two-way cycleway on the north side of the road and a one-way cycleway on the south side. Cycleways will be segregated from general traffic by landscaping strip between Madingley Road Park and Ride and Eddington Avenue. Access to some land from third parties will be required. For more information on the consultation and the layouts, please see Document Library here. Have your say on the public consultation which is open until 2 March. Network Rail launched a public consultation last week which is open until 2 March on proposals for a new railway station and associated infrastructure in the south of Cambridge.
The proposals for the new station include:
The new station is proposed to be built in the vicinity of the growing Cambridge Biomedical Campus to improve connectivity in the Cambridgeshire region and improve accessibility for patients and visitors to Addenbrooke’s and Royal Papworth hospitals. The new station would also provide better connections to proposed new housing development across the southern fringe of the city. Subject to gaining the necessary funding and consent, work could start on the station in 2023 with a target of station opening in 2025. The public will be invited to attend consultation events to comment on the proposals being put forward which includes three possible location options and early designs for the station and possible access. To find out more about these planned consultation events, please see here. Due to weather conditions over the last few days, the re-opening of the cycle and footpath on Cowley Road has been delayed and it will now be sometime in January, weather permitting.
The bus stop on the guided bus route (i.e. the drop off opposite the station) will be temporarily closed and relocated to the south end of the cycle park from Monday 6 January for two weeks while contractors operate a mobile crane from the section of the road opposite the original bus stop. The original drop off zone for shuttle users will be reopened in early February as the diversion works would be completed by then. |
