The North American and European ridesharing market will see strong growth, with rideshare operators rolling out new business models to target niche customer segments. And in the European market a fixed ridesharing is expected to dominate by 2025, although dynamic ridesharing is also picking up pace. Ridesharing can reduce the number of cars needed on urban roads globally by up to 2.49 million vehicles, decrease vehicle kilometres travelled by 40.19 billion and lower the corresponding end-of-life (EOL) emissions by 15.9 megatons.’ Further information on ridesharing can be found here
Frost & Sullivan - Automotive & Transportation Growth Partnership Service program has produced a ride sharing report which indicates ‘Investors are racing to claim a stake in the potential multibillion-dollar ridesharing (known in the UK as 2+ car sharing) market. Advances in Technology that aid in the adoption of ridesharing, and governmental policy support, such as high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes and toll-fee waivers, are bolstering market evolution.

The schemes form part of a wider cross-city cycling project, funded by the Greater Cambridge City Deal, to bridge gaps in the city’s cycle network. The project consists of five separate schemes in the north, east and south of the city, bridging gaps in the existing network as well as to shops, schools and employment sites. The five cross city cycling projects are: Links to Cambridge North Rail Station and the Science Park; Hills Road and Addenbrooke’s Route; Ditton Lane and links to East Cambridge; Arbury Road; and Fulbourn/Cherry Hinton Eastern Access.
Work begins this week on the northern scheme (Green End Road) to improve cycle routes leading to the new Cambridge North Station and Science Park, while improvements to Hills Road and Addenbrooke’s routes are due to start in February / early March. The City Deal is investing £20 million to enhance the cycle network in the city and South Cambridgeshire which will support the growth expected in Cambridgeshire. Details of construction dates, information events and works for the first two click here According to a report for Cambridgeshire County Council: “Allowing cyclists to be exempt from no-entry restrictions, and to travel both ways on one-way streets, is a cost effective and easy way of expanding the city cycle network. With better permeability for cyclists it also encourages residents to cycle, rather than use a car for short, local journeys.” The measure is being considered in Guest Road, Collier Road, Emery Street, Perowne Street, Sedgwick Street, Catharine Street, Thoday Street, Ross Street, Hemingford Road and Argyle Street which are side streets off Mill Road; also along Panton Street, St Eligius Street, Coronation Street, Norwich Street, Union Road and New Square which are off Hills Road. The first UK wide survey of public bike share was published this month by independent shared transport charity, Bikeplus. Survey indicates a significant number of people switched journeys from cars to bike share bikes, which has a direct impact on congestion and emissions. Key trends show that increasing number of women are using bike share, and that people combine it with public transport. Proportionately more women use public bike share than ride their own bikes. Only 25% of cycle trips on personal bikes (cyclists riding their own bikes) are made by women, but 42% of people riding shared bikes are women. 50% of all those surveyed started to cycle or increased the amount they cycle as a result of the bike share scheme. The survey showed that people use bike share for parts of trips made by public transport – 40% use bike share and the train and 20% use bike share and the bus in the same journey. The results indicate that bike share is an important tool to help to normalise cycling and provide the last mile extension to public transport. TP+ has organised with Crazy Spanners mobile cycle workshop, to offer bike repairs and services on site at the Science Park. TP+ hope that by providing more convenient access to vital repairs and maintenance, more employees on the Science and Business parks will be encouraged to begin cycling to work. Cycling to work is better for the environment, reduces congestion and pollution in our city and at the same time allows us to reduce stress and improve fitness. For those who are new to cycling, bike maintenance especially replacing a punctured tyre can be a little daunting, and difficult to fit around our busy schedule. As part of our ongoing commitment (Area-Wide Travel Plan) to offer sustainable travel options and measures to all the employees on both parks, we hope that this arrangement with Crazy Spanners will make bike repairs, and therefore cycling, more accessible.
Crazy Spanners mobile workshop is located behind the Cambridge Science Park Innovation Centre every Tuesday's and Thursday's from 0730 to 1730. Network rail has been busy working on the new Cambridge North passenger station. The station will serve the employees of Science and Business parks including St John's Innovation Centre as well as provide park and ride facilities for the A10/A14 corridors, a hub for an extension of the Northstowe /St Ives corridor busway and the residents of north Cambridge suburbs remote from the existing station.
Programme of works at the North Station is on target and the station is currently scheduled to open on Sunday 21st May 2017. |
