Cambridge North Station Opening on 21st May

28/4/2017

Picture
Finally, a brand new three-platform railway station will be opening in Cambridge – Cambridge North station by Greater Anglia on Sunday 21st of May.

The station will serve Cambridge’s Science Park, suburbs and villages north of Cambridge and is expected to ease the 11 million a year footfall at the city's main station. Station will be served by Greater Anglia and Great Northern.

Network Rail is currently putting finishing touches to the £50 million station's construction before handing it over to Greater Anglia to manage.

Initially four Greater Anglia trains an hour, will serve the station two in each direction - one service to London, one arrival from London, one Cambridge to Norwich service and one Norwich to Cambridge service. Fares include Greater Anglia advance purchase Cambridge North to London single tickets from £7.

In 2019, a new direct Greater Anglia Norwich to Stansted Airport service will be introduced, stopping at Cambridge North, when the company introduces new trains on its network during 2019-20.

Great Northern trains will also stop at the station, with two trains per hour to London King’s Cross, of which one will be a stopping train starting at Cambridge North and one a fast train per hour on the new Ely to London fast service, off peak. This will be slightly different in the morning and evening peaks. Great Northern services will be provided by its new modern trains, as it introduces an entire replacement fleet of air-conditioned trains on the Cambridge-King’s Lynn Fen Line.

The station includes a 1,000-space cycle park and a car park for 450 cars. It is also served by the Cambridge guided bus service and local buses. Local cycle routes connect with the new station and it is within easy reach of the A14 and A10.

Stagecoach Services from 21st May

28/4/2017

Stagecoach has published its new timetable for the buses on the Guideway which will commence from 21st of May. There’s an extra service, the N service, which runs every 20 minutes through the day and the current ‘extra A’ services early morning and evening will now be the D service and serve both Cambridge stations. Buses will operate from 7am (arriving at the station at 0713) to 7pm (the last bus to depart at 1919) and run between Northstowe and the City centre stopping at guideway stops with additional stops at the new railway station and Westbrooke centre. The last three A journeys from Trumpington will also serve the new station on their way to St Ives. Further information on the N service timetables, please click here.

The Citi 2 will serve the Cambridge North station on its current timetable. Buses will terminate at the station rather than the Science Park. There will be one stop on either side of the road, one outside the Test Centre (or very near to) and one outside the old Park & Ride (P&R) site. After the 21st of May, the only service which will enter and use the existing stop at the Science Park will be the morning Milton P&R services.

Ofa bikes launched in Cambridge

28/4/2017

Picture
A three-week trial of a new bike sharing scheme from Chinese company Ofo has been launched in Cambridge. According to Ofo’s spokesperson, the trial is to understand how the city uses the bikes, how far they travel, who uses them, where they are distributed and learn from that and gradually introduce bikes. The $2billion business has released 20 bikes on to the city streets from 20th of April as part of its first ever European venture. Operating in 81 cities, Ofo's bikes are hired through a smartphone app and can be picked up and dropped off without the need for a fixed docking station.

One current limitation of the Ofo scheme is that bikes cannot be found through its app and instead must be spotted locked to bike racks or street furniture. Once found users enter the bike's code in the app and will be sent its lock code. Cycles cost 50 pence for the first half hour's hire, but will be free throughout the three-week trial. Rides end once a user locks up the bike and signs out in the app. Phone GPS allows the company to track where the bikes have been left. If broken or incorrectly parked bikes are spotted, users can alert the company through the app or email. Local ground staff (10) have been deployed to maintain the bikes and support their distribution across Cambridge.

Early this month GreenAir Cars received the Travel 4 Cambridgeshire - a runner up Green Award which was presented at the SME Cambridgeshire Business Awards. This is one of the best things a small company such as ourselves can receive. The evening was a great opportunity to meet, socialise and network with various other businesses. Winning such an award looks great on your website, brochure and another media. From this event, we have also managed to negotiate a meeting with a high profile business on the Cambridge Science Park. We see the SME as a contributing factor to great opportunity and can only insist other companies have the desire to get involved in such a brilliant event next year.

Air quality fix requires clean innovative car sharing schemes for London

28/4/2017

Carplus launched a headline summary of its research into car clubs in London last month, at a conference hosted by IPPR on the future of transport in London. The conference debated how digital technology and new business models were disrupting transport in the capital.

With air quality high on the agenda, it was clear that car club vehicles have an important role as a cost effective way for Londoners to access the cleanest vehicles. Research this year shows that the entire fleet is compliant with emissions charging proposals, and includes ultra-low emission electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

Car club members often give up their own cars when they join. In 2016 they gave up 31,000 private cars. Car use in London has fallen 25% over the past 10 years, as car clubs have grown over this time.

Executive Director Alistair Kirkbride said: “Car clubs can make a huge contribution to improving air quality. Not only are they cleaner, with low or no tailpipe emissions, but car club members drive less than average Londoners. If we could get one million people to give up cars and drive car club vehicles instead we could see a huge improvement in air quality – and a reduction in congestion and the space our crowded capital gives to cars.”

In the UK, there are over 245,000 car club members with more than 4,000 vehicles in the UK. Car club members walk, cycle and use public transport more than the national average. Car clubs provide alternatives to car ownership, reducing the number of cars on the roads.
