Picture
Due to the A14 bridge works the Busway and maintenance track has been closed between Histon (Cambridge bound stop) and Orchard Park Spur from 21st June until 0500 on 8th July 2019.

Busway routes A, B and D will leave the track at Histon (turning right onto Cambridge Road) and through Orchard Park to Cambridge Regional College where it will rejoin it's normal route. Passengers are able to board and alight at the stops just outside the Mace Shop and at CRC. Busway Route B will leave the track at Histon (turning right onto Cambridge Road) and will continue along Histon Road. Passengers are able to board and alight at the stops just outside the Mace Shop and at stops just South of King's Hedges Road.

The access closure will also have an impact on the pedestrians and cyclists. County Council Busway team have suggested the following diversion route for pedestrians and cyclists via Cambridge Road (Impington), B1049/A14 roundabout, Histon Road, Kings Hedges Road and then Orchard Park busway path.

There will be further closure from 24th July until 4th September 2019.

Safety on the Guided Busway

28/6/2019

Safety on the Guided Busway is a priority for the County Council and taken very seriously. Regular inspections and assessments are carried out on all our roads, footpaths and cycleways.

The Guided Busway is no different, it is continually reviewed for maintenance purposes and any potential enhancements. Since the busway opened in 2011, the surrounding area along the route has changed and evolved, particularly, where numbers of people and cyclists are increasing as more businesses are expanding along the route.

Cambridgeshire County Council’s Chair of the Highways and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Mathew Shuter said: “Following the recent incident on the Guided Busway, officers are assessing all the crossing points along the busway to ensure we’re doing all we can to increase awareness and promote safety.” As a result of this review, some additional enhancements, such as extra signage and a guard rail, will be installed on the busway at Kings Hedges Road over the next few weeks. A temporary barrier was installed end of May before the permanent work is completed. The aim is to increase awareness at the crossing point, reminding cyclists and pedestrians to stop and look for buses before crossing the busway.

Mill Road Bridge Closure from 1st July

28/6/2019

Picture
Mill Road Bridge will be closed to vehicles for eight weeks from 1st July for crucial work being carried out to improve rail services. A temporary footbridge will be installed so pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross the railway for most of the working time.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross Mill Road using a temporary footbridge, other than for a period of around five days when the route will need to be closed for safety reasons. There may also be other ad hoc closures for short periods to align with the sequencing of the work but any closures will be advertised on the information boards on Mill Road Bridge.

There will also be temporary changes to the Citi 2 bus timetable for eight weeks from 1st July.

New Guidance on the Cycle to Work Scheme

28/6/2019

Picture
It’s now official that Cycle to Work scheme in the UK will allow you to purchase your bike and gear worth over £1,000, following the release of new guidance from the Department of Transport. The updated guidance will allow for the purchase of e-bikes and modified bikes for the less able to join the scheme if their employer offers it. It's hoped that plans outlined by Cycling Minister Michael Ellis will help to tackle congestion, reduce emissions and speed up commutes in urban areas. This will ensure people of all abilities and fitness levels can cycle together is a key part of this.

Cycle to Work schemes operate on a salary sacrifice basis, with employees 'loaning' a bike off their employer tax-free, initially for a year. You can then extend the loan and eventually buy it at a nominal price calculated factoring in the bike's depreciated value over time - after five years, this will be almost nothing as HMRC consider the bike to be of 'negligible' value. Cycle to work scheme will make it easier for employers to offer e-bikes on the scheme.
