Rural Bus Routes Saved

31/8/2018

Picture
Several important rural bus routes, temporarily reprieved after Cambridgeshire County Council stepped in to save them last August, will now be funded until the end of the financial year.

The Council’s Economy and Environment Committee met last month to consider extending the funding for previously agreed subsidised contracted bus services until the end of March 2019, pending the results of a more far reaching review by James Palmer, the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

The Committee agreed to extend funding for several bus services, including service 30, between Huntingdon and Ramsey, and service 35, between Huntingdon through Chatteris to March, along with the extension of funding for 13 other previously agreed subsidised contracted bus services.

Mayor James Palmer stepped in to say that the Combined Authority will provide the extra funding to see service 46, which is used by students attending Neale-Wade Academy, extended, plus three new services which Whippet Coaches have recently decided to pull out of the 196 Waterbeach to Cambridge service, the 31 Barley to Cambridge service and the 75 Wrestlingworth to Cambridge.

The County Council will continue to fund all the other previously agreed bus services until the end of the 2018/19 financial year, using reserves held for this purpose, when the Combined Authority’s review of these services is complete. The Council will then work with the Mayor to discuss future funding arrangements.

Park and Ride on the Rise

31/8/2018

Since the £1 parking charge was removed on 1 April there has been a boost in the numbers returning to the service. Overall passenger journeys rose by 1.3% in April, 10.6% in May and 11.6% in June compared with the same months last year. The largest increase has been experienced on the Babraham route which has seen growth of over 20% in each of the three months.

Facilities at the sites are also in high demand. With the help of the Greater Cambridge Partnership, 90 secure cycle lockers were installed at many of the Park and Ride and Busway car parks. This brought the total number of secure cycle lockers to 154 across the seven sites. There are currently only 11 lockers free to hire and at two sites have a waiting list. More lockers are on the way to cope with this rising demand.

Construction began this week on Cross City Cycling Project

Construction began this week to improve road safety for cyclists and pedestrians travelling between Cambridge and Fen Ditton. The work is expected to be completed in Spring 2019. Temporary traffic signals will be placed during working hours, which will be between 0930 and 1530 during the initial phase of works.

Work involves widening the shared-use path and cycleway on both sides of Horningsea Road between High Ditch Road and north of Fen Ditton Primary School.

Ditton Lane will also be widened as part of the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s Cross City Cycling scheme, which will also see a new toucan crossing installed to the north of the school and an upgraded pedestrian crossing near the High Street.

The other Cross City Cycling projects are: Fulbourn/Cherry Hinton, Arbury Road, Hills Road & Addenbrooke’s and Cambridge North & Cambridge Science Park. For more information, see here.
