The investigation by infrastructure experts John Laing co-funded by AstraZeneca has found it is possible to build the station on the current twin tracks, which had been a major barrier to progress. Both parties now believe the station could be built sooner rather than later, as part of a landmark project funded by the private sector.
The initial review of the practicalities of a station are good, and John Laing and AstraZeneca will now co-fund further detailed technical studies to assess the viability for a privately funded station. Laing states, "Developing a station to serve south Cambridge will help address traffic congestion problems, and we will continue to work closely with the rail industry seeking to incorporate a station onto the existing network that will serve trains to London and elsewhere in Cambridgeshire."
