Review of Highway Code Set to Empower Cyclists and Pedestrians

26/10/2018

Picture
The Department for Transport will review the Highway Code to update guidance on how road users should behave around people on bikes and pedestrians. The code will be revised to highlight how to avoid the dangers of close passing cyclists and encourage people to adopt the ‘Dutch Reach’ in an effort to reduce casualties caused by car dooring. This is a method of opening a car door with the hand furthest from the handle, forcing drivers and passengers to check over their shoulder for approaching traffic and cyclists.

In 2017, pedestrians accounted for more than a quarter (26%) of road fatalities - up 11% compared with 2010-14 and 5% compared with 2016. Motor vehicles were responsible for 99% of pedestrian deaths and in 2017 took the lives of 402 people. These statistics are shocking and have devastating impacts on people's lives. Too often people walking pay the ultimate price on our roads - despite not causing road deaths, congestion or toxic air levels.  For the full copy of the report, please see here.

Ely Southern Bypass Opens on 31st October

26/10/2018

Picture
Ely Southern Bypass is on track and will be open to traffic on Wednesday 31 October. The new road will connect the A142 at Angel Drove to Stuntney Causeway and will provide a huge boost for the area and will ease congestion in and around Ely. The scheme includes a 1.7km long single carriageway road, including a viaduct crossing the Great Ouse and bridges over two railway lines. The road will solve long-standing problems and reduce journey times for drivers. The area around Ely station is heavily congested with lorries and other larger vehicles not being able to use the low underpass. Once the bypass has opened, work on the existing underpass at the low bridge will begin to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists until late November. For more details about the project, please see here.

Don't Forget Your Bike Lights

26/10/2018

Picture
As the clocks go back an hour this Sunday, please remember to carry your bike lights. In the UK there are legal minimum requirements for cycling after dark; one front white light, one rear red light, plus the reflectors that should already be on your bike. It is important to remember that your lights must be working properly and your reflectors are clean and visible. For some our top tips, see here.

Clean Up of the Cambridge Cycle Point

26/10/2018

Picture
Abandoned and unused bikes will be removed from the Cycle Point during October and November to free up space and enable a deep clean. If you do not use your bike on a regular basis please remove it otherwise it could be removed by Greater Anglia’s clean up team. Bikes that appear to be abandoned and unused will be tagged for a 15 day period. After that period the bike will be removed and taken to storage for a 90 day period. For more information, see here.
