The new 12-mile bypass to the south of Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire will open to traffic on Monday 9 December, a full year ahead of schedule. The new bypass will run between Ellington and Swavesey and is part of a £1.5 billion project to upgrade 21 miles of the A14 between Cambridge and Huntingdon.
The map above shows how you can join and leave the new bypass, and which junctions have been renumbered. What to expect:
What happens next? The upgraded section of the A1 between Alconbury and Buckden opened earlier this year, which means that the western section of the upgraded A14 is now complete. Work on the rest of the project, between Swavesey and Milton, continues and is on schedule to be completed as planned by December 2020. The work Highways are carrying out at Huntingdon including the removal of the old viaduct over the railway line, will complete after this. For more information on this project, please visit here. The annual 5km Santa Run is taking place again this year on Wednesday 11 December starting from the Bradfield Centre. This event is open to all the employees working on the Cambridge Science Park, Cambridge Business Park and St John’s Innovation Park. You must register here as there is a cost involved which is going towards East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice in Milton. You don’t have to be physically fit, as you can jog or walk the entire route.
From Sunday 15 December, Greater Anglia (GA) will introduce new services to Cambridge and Cambridge North which includes:
These services will be supported by Greater Anglia’s introduction of brand-new trains. To enable Greater Anglia’s trains to pass through Cambridge, the hourly Thameslink service between London King’s Cross and Cambridge North will terminate at Cambridge from Monday 16 December. Please check online journey planners as train times will change and some services may provide new journey options. The Multi-Utility Trench corridor to Cowley Road (i.e. cycle and pedestrian route) are still on track to complete and reopen on 20 December. However, if anything is discovered this may delay the reopening date. This will also include the reopening of the pedestrian access route from the Business Park directly onto that route and the pedestrian route and cycle path alongside Milton Avenue. This will reopen direct pedestrian and cycle access from Milton Road itself down to the station square.
Highways England have advised that the Guided Busway will be closed until the end of January 2020 so they can safely complete the Impington A14 bridge work and repair damage to the busway. This closure will only affect bus passengers as the path remains open to cyclists and pedestrians.
